Pylon or pole signs, as they are sometimes called, generally refer to any sign that is elevated on a pole or poles.  These signs are commonly erected to maximize message readability and impact for long-distance viewing.  These signs can be illuminated or non-illuminated.  Shopping centers frequently use this type of sign, where allowed, to display their tenants.
